The Intelligence of Plants

There is a Bob Marley quote I often return to: “Everything in life has its purpose. Find its reason in every season.”

Over the years, I have realized that those words describe much of what I have been searching for.

I spend much of my life looking for botanicals that I believe express something extraordinary. Flowers, fruits, tea leaves, roots, seeds, blossoms, ancient sugars, heirloom cultivars, spices, and resins. Each carries its own history, its own character, and its own way of interacting with the world around it.

I am drawn to growers who have devoted their lives to regenerative farming because I believe a plant expresses something entirely different when it is allowed to grow as nature intended, with extraordinary care and without the constraints of commercial agriculture.

Over time, I have come to think of every botanical as having its own intelligence, its own story, and its own reason for being here.

My work begins by trying to understand that story.

Before a botanical ever becomes part of a collection, I want to know where it grows, the people who have cared for it, the traditions that surround it, and the qualities that have made it meaningful across generations. I want to understand how it responds to its environment and what it has to teach us when we pay attention.

That understanding shapes every collection we create at Violet Flame.

Cacao has always been at the center of this work. For centuries it has been revered as a plant that opens the heart. I have often found that when our hearts are open, we remember something essential. We remember our connection to one another, to the natural world, and to the quiet beauty that surrounds us every day.

Each month, the Cacao Spiritus Club gives me a place to continue this exploration. Every collection begins with a season, a botanical, an archetype, or a question that has captured my attention. It is where I continue learning from the plants and where many of the ideas that eventually become part of Violet Flame first take shape.

Chocolate has always been the way I share these discoveries.

Every collection is an invitation to slow down, to notice, and to spend time with the remarkable intelligence that plants have carried all along.
